In the TV show, parents interview the candidates to look for their perception of a good match. I think they try to evaluate personality based on candidates who answered with respect, and maybe their careers and hobbies. Parents look for things in common for their loved one, but maybe that is not what the daughter or son wants.

I believe that the importance is the freedom we have when we are raised with western customs. People are free to date with who they want, so they can get to know the personality of the girlfriend/boyfriend, not just marrying someone based on a profile or a first-date.
