In the case of the back of the hand, there's a name for it. But i understand what the writter is trying to make us analize.
There are lot of things that don't have exactly a  name, but that's part of human's life, we are imperfect.
Also i think, the things that don't have a known name is because isn't too much necesary. The human acts according to his needs, when he thinks that must change something, just starts to do it.
That's how the culture, costums, and language have changed through the years. When we are unconfortable with something we just look for a better option...
