I like Belkey's point in her post. Your appearance, sadly, plays a rather big part in nonverbal communication. You could wear sweatpants and a old t shirt and people will look at you odd or avoid you because they come up with preconceived notion about you and stick with it. However, if you were to dress up a bit you'd normally get a completely different reaction. That's just the way people are, they are quick to judge and usually don't drop those judgements until they get to know you.
