Well, he may be implying that he thinks that she should be the one cleaning up the house by buying her a vacuum for her birthday. That probably occured in the olden days when men thought that women were supposed to be the house maids. It is the thought that counts though so it shouldn't matter what it is that he bought for her because he bought it when he didn't have to. Would she rather him give her a vacuum or nothing at all? On the other hand, they probably didn't have a vacuum so he decided to get her one as a birthday present. That's the only other reason i could think of honestly. I wonder what she thought when she got it...
