Parental control is such a  silly show. I don't understand how parents want to show that their child has a strong personality when they are choosing with whom their son/daughter is going to date. 
However, in the real life, out of silly TV shows, personality  is indeed important to develop interpersonal relationships. Personality should represent the values and thoughts of someone, therefore, it should resemble who you are as individual.
Since each individual is unique, so their personality will be different from each other.  And since we live in a society that allow us to decide our date, we have the freedom to chose which personality matches with ours.
