What’s wrong with public display of affection? ... I think that it depends on the "degree" of affection that you are showing in public.
We have to consider that we live in a society with certain moral standards that set the limits of whether something is sociable accepted or not. Either we agree with these standards or not we all live under this framework of rules. So, for the majority of people, give a hug, a kiss, hold hands or even say sweet words for whatever the purpose is (romantic, friendship, family) seems fine. However, if they show more intimate affection in public, people may not be very comfortable.
Now, we also have to take into account that what I may think to be sociable acceptable as public display of affection, could contradict what my grandma, mom or you think of the issue. Therefore, it also depends on people's personal opinions.
I don't think it's appropriate for a couple to kiss lustfully in public because that should be done in a private place. I don't mind when couples kiss but I don't like to see "hands going up and down" (if you know what I mean) that is just incorrect to me because that was the way I was raised.
Talking about how people's opinion change, here is this article about an incident that a couple faced because they were kissing in public. The grammar and structure of the article may not be the very best because the article is originally in Spanish so I used Google translator so you can have an idea of the story. If you have time to read it, what do you think about the situation?

Oh wow, that article seems a bit extreme. It was not like he was doing anything wrong. It was his wife. It might have been different if it wasn't his wife though. That could become a tangled mess.
